EZ-Lime™

EZ-Lime™ is a patent-pending technology for free-flowing pellets of hydrated lime bound together with a natural organic asphalt oil enhancer.   The lime provides excellent bonding of the binder and aggregate, acting as an anti-strip agent to prevent moisture damage on the pavement.   Hydrated lime anti-strip is mandated for use in all HMA pavements by 28 US states.   While off-the-shelf hydrated lime powder has been effectively used as an anti-strip for many years, it can create problems.   The lime dust gets into hot mix plant bearings and air systems causing equipment breakdowns.   Hydrated lime powder bridges in the silos and feeders, resulting in inaccurate addition rates.   According to suppliers, hydrated lime can have a loss rate of up to a 50% in the plant.   A 1.5% plant addition equals approximately 1% in the mix.   EZ-lime is a product developed specifically for the asphalt industry to solve these problems.   EZ-Lime™ pellets can be added directly into the asphalt oil (bitumen) before mixing with the aggregate, they can be added into the pugmill of batch plants, or they can be added into the RAP (Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement) feeder with no need for additional equipment.

EZ-Lime™ Pellet Benefits

  • Better flow equals better control
  • Safer for workers, reduces inhalation and fire hazards
  • Reduces hydrated lime waste in the hot plant
  • Removes lime from the bag house, making the bags last longer
  • Reduces metal corrosion in hot mix plants
  • Reduces costs

EZ-Lime™ pellets were successfully tested in Tucson, Arizona at Granite Construction’s Swan plant.   According to Bill Mackey of Granite, "With the addition of EZ-lime to the mixing chamber, many of the drawbacks, including delivery schedules of hydrated lime, are eliminated and the overall environmental benefits are extremely positive."
